VBS Companion Materials for
Pirates of the "I Don't Care"-ibbean
Available from Salt and Light Ministries
In conjunction with our new children’s musical, Pirates of the “I Don’t Care”-ibbean, we have some materials that you may want to use as part of an expanded program like a VBS.
First of all, a little background information: I first produced “Pirates” as a VBS for my home church last summer. Lillenas then picked up the idea for a musical, which required a rewrite for the market and the addition of eight songs. In the process, the theme was changed from “faith” to “storing up treasures in heaven”. Now, the bridge between the two is easily made by saying it takes faith to store up your treasures in heaven. The four stories in the VBS are about men who saw beyond the temporal to the eternal. Coincidently, their stories all take place on the water: Noah, Moses, Jonah, and Peter (walking on the water). An outline of the four days is included here:
Theme: Faith and Storing Up Treasures in Heaven
Theme Verse: Matthew 6:19, "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.”
Day 1:
Memory Verse: Hebrews 11:7: “By faith, Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family.”
Story: Noah
Loco Motion: “Noah”
Day 2:
Memory Verse: Hebrews 11:29: “By faith the people passed through the Red Sea on dry land; but when the Egyptians tried to do so, they were drowned.”
Story: Moses
Loco Motion: “Pharaoh, Pharaoh”
Day 3:
Memory Verse: Hebrews 11:6: “And without faith, it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”
Story: Jonah
Loco Motion: “Big Fish”
Day 4:
Memory Verse: Hebrews 12:1: “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Story: Jesus Walks on the Water
Loco Motion: “Dive”
Day 5:
Performance of the musical, Pirates of the “I Don’t Care”-ibbean.
Our VBS model is a 2 and ½ hour model that includes two parallel tracks of one hour each and a half hour closing assembly with the entire group. Basically, the group is divided into two equal groups of size according to age. (Group 1 is ages 5-8 and Group 2 is ages 9-12, for example.) Group 1 initially goes into a general session in a larger meeting hall, like the sanctuary. Group 2 splits in half again according to ages. The younger kids in Group 2 begin in a music/movement class and the older kids go to a craft time. After a half an hour, the two groups in Group 2 switch. After the first hour, the two large groups rotate between parallel tracks and the kids in Group 1 go to the music/crafts tracks and the kids in Group 2 go to the general session in the larger meeting hall. The actual times of the sessions, classes, and overall morning schedule can be changed to accommodate your needs.
An overview then, of the morning schedule would look like this:

Again, these times can be adapted to suit the needs of your specific program. The General Session includes the teaching element, which is more of a storytelling venue than a classroom model. Here is the recommended schedule for the General Session. Remember, this outline is repeated twice in the morning, once for each age group.

You can order the pirate puppet from Let Us Teach Kids. You could also consider a pirate parrot puppet as well. You can order parrot puppets from One Way Street.
You would also need the music, movement, and dramatic resources available from Lillenas Publishing. Our office will be carrying bulk CDs, split channel CDs, and digital resources to include the Director’s Book and the Production DVD when they become available.
We can provide you these resources on a CD-Rom and a CD for $19.99. I would also like to add pictures of our set, costumes, and props from our VBS. This package does not include the training DVD, “Loco Motions”, which is available as a separate resource for $20.00. If you have further questions about these resources or the VBS structure, please contact us at Melissa@saltandlightmin.org. Click to order your Pirates VBS Package!
